SPHERA – the ball press from Willmes: Gentle pressing with 360-degree technology

A new generation of pneumatic wine presses

With SPHERA, Willmes presents a new generation of pneumatic wine presses that combine tradition and innovation. Thanks to their spherical design, grapes can be pressed evenly and gently without corners and edges. This results in musts of the highest purity and clarity.

The SPHERA was specially developed for use with red wine mash and whole grapes. Its principle is based on static pressing without rotation. The harvested grapes remain undisturbed in the container and are pressed evenly from all sides without additional mechanical stress.

The 360-degree pressing principle—more surface area, less pressure

The patented 360-degree pressing principle is at the heart of SPHERA. A flexible membrane inflates evenly in the spherical container and forms a homogeneous pomace cake around the central FLEXIDRAIN juice channel.

This creates a larger juicing surface area, allowing the juice to flow efficiently and with significantly less pressure. This process is similar to the way a traditional basket press works, but combines it with the precision and controllability of modern pneumatic systems.

Regardless of whether the press body is filled to ten or one hundred percent capacity, the juice flows evenly. This ensures consistent results, shorter pressing times, and up to seventy percent less sediment in the must compared to conventional presses.

Flexibility for all requirements

The SPHERA is available in two sizes:
SPHERA 1000 for reading quantities from 0.5 to 3 tons
SPHERA 2000 for reading quantities from 1 to 6 tons

It thus meets the requirements of both small and large wineries alike.

The closed press container can also be used for maceration. A manual juice valve seals the container so that the grapes can macerate before pressing. The juice is then extracted at minimal pressure, which is not possible with traditional basket presses.

Well-thought-out design for everyday use

In addition to producing juice of the highest quality, the SPHERA impresses with its simple and functional operation.

Filling: The large 600 mm lid opening allows for easy loading with a conveyor belt, funnel, or small feed boxes, without any redistribution.

Emptying: The round press body can be rotated so that the pomace falls directly into the juice and pomace container. After a few turns, the container is completely emptied.

Cleaning: The smooth, corner-free interior surface ensures quick and hygienic cleaning.

Advantages of SPHERA at a glance

The SPHERA combines the gentle operation of traditional presses with the efficiency of modern technology.

  • Pressing without rotation for minimal stress

  • Uniform juicing thanks to 360-degree pressure distribution

  • Up to seventy percent less sediment in the must

  • Shorter pressing times and high yield

  • Ideal for red wine mash and whole grapes

  • Quick cleaning thanks to smooth inner surfaces

  • Flexible and easy to use

Conclusion: SPHERA sets new standards in wine press technology

With the SPHERA, Willmes has succeeded in translating the principles of the traditional basket press into a modern form. Thanks to its spherical design, 360-degree pressing principle, and FLEXIDRAIN juice channel, juicing is carried out evenly with minimal pressure, resulting in musts of the highest quality.

Whether white wine or red wine, mash or whole grapes – the SPHERA stands for maximum flexibility, efficiency, and quality. It is an example of how modern engineering can further refine winemaking.
